Unveiling the ULTRA Project

The ULTRA Project is an ambitious research endeavor aiming to push the boundaries of human endurance and uncover the secrets of the body and mind's transformation. Forty ordinary individuals, previously inactive, embarked on a structured training journey to become long-distance triathletes within a year.

But here's where it gets controversial: while the participants' primary goal is to complete the race, the researchers are digging deeper. They want to understand the intricate changes that occur in the body and mind during this intense training period.

Meet three of these remarkable participants: Bruce Aitken, Vicens Paneque, and Sophia Van Slyke, who share their experiences and the impact this project has had on their lives.

The Science Behind the Sweat

Dr. Robert Shave, a Professor of Health and Exercise Sciences at UBC Okanagan, explains the scientific rationale behind the study. "When someone transitions from a sedentary lifestyle to completing a long-distance triathlon, it's an incredible physiological and psychological journey," he says.

The project goes beyond just training; it's a comprehensive research study involving a diverse team of experts from UBC and Harvard. Participants undergo rigorous assessments, from blood tests and aerobic capacity evaluations to psychological surveys and body composition scans. The training program, delivered via a custom app, is meticulously monitored, ensuring participants commit to at least 80% of the plan, which peaks at an impressive 17 hours per week.

The Human Connection: A Powerful Motivator

At the core of this project is the human element. Participants highlight the sense of community and connection as a key motivator. "We feel united, even though we're all at different fitness levels," shares Sophia Van Slyke, an undergraduate Chemistry student and study participant.

Bruce Aitken, another participant and UBC alumnus, agrees, "It's about the journey and the commitment we make together. I've made some amazing friends, like Vicens, through this experience."

The Results: A Journey of Self-Discovery

Throughout the study, all three participants progressed steadily, increasing their training hours in the pool and on the road. Nine months into the project, Van Slyke completed a half-Ironman in Victoria, BC, alongside her father. Paneque and Aitken successfully finished a full Ironman in Sacramento, California, after a year of dedicated training.

"The swim and bike ride were fantastic, but the run was a real challenge," Paneque recalls. Aitken adds, "Vicens and I didn't get a chance for a finish-line photo together because I was so exhausted my wife had to help me back to the hotel!"

Despite the intensity, Aitken is eager to continue his triathlon journey, recently hiring a coach outside the program.

This study not only transformed the participants' physical abilities but also their mindset and lifestyle. It's a testament to the power of human potential and the impact of a supportive community.
